Noor's 40th — Venue Shortlist

Date: Sat 16 May 2026 weekend | Guests: ~8-15 adults + kids | Base: Portishead BS20 6RE

Questions for Pierre

  1. Text Lauren. Ask her: "What was the name of that spa on the beach you went to — was it called White House?" The strongest match I found is The White House, Rhuallt, North Wales — a spa with pool, outdoor vitality pool, steam room, restaurant. But it's in North Wales (2h+ from Bristol, 4h+ from London), which breaks the east-of-Bristol rule. Lauren might mean somewhere else entirely. This is worth 30 seconds of texting before anyone books anything.

  2. Date check: Noor said "the fifteenth" in the recording. You're using Sat 16 May. Just confirm — is it definitely the Saturday?

  3. Budget ceiling: Is the total budget ~£500-800 for the whole thing, or £50-80 per adult (which for 10-15 adults = £500-1200 total)? This changes whether Shape C (private house) is realistic.

TL;DR — Top Pick

Cotswold Country Park & Beach is the best balance of everything Noor asked for. Cheap, east of Bristol, kids swim + adults chill, BBQ on site, AquaVenture inflatable course, weather backup (cafe/covered areas), and London guests aren't disadvantaged. Book the BBQ area + AquaVenture group session. Done.

If budget stretches to ~£5-6k shared across couples, The Pool House, Westbury is the dream: private house, indoor pool, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, fire pit, everyone sleeps over, no time pressure.

Shape A — Fancy Water Park + BBQ

1. Cotswold Country Park & Beach ★ TOP PICK

Detail Info
Location Shorncote, near Cirencester, GL7 6DF
From Portishead ~1h 15m
From London ~1h 45m (M4)
What it is UK's largest inland beach. Swimming lagoon, paddling lagoon, AquaVenture inflatable course, mini golf, beach, BBQ areas, cafe
Admission ~£20 per car (up to 5 people) — works out ~£4/person
BBQ hire ~£20/day. Bring your own food + cook on their BBQs
AquaVenture ~£16pp (inflatable obstacle course on lake). Kids 6+ (under 10 with adult). Group discount for 20+
Capacity Huge — no issue for your group
Family-friendly Yes. Lifeguarded lagoon, shallow paddling area for small kids
Weather backup Weaker point — cafe/covered seating but no proper indoor facility. Beach works in drizzle, not in a downpour
Sam's allergies BYO food on the BBQ = you control this completely
Season Opens 27 March 2026. Will be open 16 May
Book cotswoldcountryparkandbeach.com / Groups: 01285 868096
Cost for 10 adults + kids ~£60-100 total (3 cars + BBQ hire) + food you bring + ~£16pp for AquaVenture if you want it. Maybe £200-250 all-in

Why this works: Cheapest option by far. Exactly what Noor described — "a place with a pool and a BBQ." East of Bristol, fair for London guests. Kids have the beach + inflatables. Adults can sit on the beach with beers. Low-fuss. Low-cost. Noor won't feel guilty about anyone spending money.

Red flag: Weather backup is the weak spot. Mid-May could be gorgeous or grim. No proper indoor fallback.

2. West Country Water Park, Bradley Stoke

Detail Info
Location Bradley Stoke, Bristol, BS32 (north Bristol, off M4/M5)
From Portishead ~30 min
From London ~2h
What it is Aqua park (inflatable course on lake), outdoor pool, venue hire, BBQ catering
Group packages Available — contact for quote. BBQ buffet, curry, pizza options
Private hire From £1,500 minimum spend (evening events 19:00-00:00)
Day packages Aqua Adventure £16pp. Pool available separately
Weather backup Indoor pool available. Better than Cotswold CP for rain
Season Pool open 31 March - 3 November 2026
Book westcountrywaterpark.co.uk

Why this works: Very close to home. Has both indoor pool and outdoor aqua park. Catering included in group packages.

Red flag: Private hire minimum spend of £1,500 is steep for a birthday BBQ. Day group packages may be more reasonable — needs a phone call. Also very local to you — might not feel like "a day out" for Noor.

3. Unity Splash Waterpark, Brean

Detail Info
Location Brean, Somerset, TA8 (Unity Beach Holiday Park)
From Portishead ~45 min
From London ~2h 30m (pushes the limit)
What it is Indoor splash zone (25m pool, fun zones, baby pool) + outdoor waterslides (summer). Part of holiday park
Pricing Day passes available, book 5 days ahead. Birthday party packages exist
Weather backup Indoor splash zone open year-round — strong weather backup
Book breansplash.com

Why this works: Indoor pool = guaranteed weather backup. Good for younger kids.

Red flag: It's a holiday park waterpark — might feel a bit "Haven" rather than "fancy water park." Brean is west/south of Bristol, not east. Longer for London guests. No obvious BBQ area for private groups.

Shape B — Spa + Beach ("White House" lead)

The "White House" Resolution

The best match for "White House spa on the beach" is The White House Hotel, Restaurant & Spa in Rhuallt, North Wales. It has a spa, pool, outdoor vitality pool, restaurant, and is near the North Wales coast.

Problem: It's in North Wales. 2h15m from Portishead, 4h+ from London. Breaks the east-of-Bristol constraint hard. Also adults-only spa vibes — unclear on family-friendliness.

Action needed: Text Lauren. She might mean somewhere else entirely. Until confirmed, don't book anything in this shape.

If Lauren's place doesn't work out, best coastal spa alternatives:

Venue Location From Bristol From London Vibe Family? Est. cost
Harbour Beach Club Hotel & Spa, Salcombe, Devon TQ8 8JH 2h 30m 4h Luxury beach club, cold water dips, spa, restaurant. Times called it "coolest beach club in UK" Unlikely — adults-oriented £100+pp spa day
Bristol Lido, Clifton BS8 3PB 15 min 2h Heated outdoor pool, restaurant, poolside bar. Beautiful setting Kids allowed 2-4pm only. £5/child. 1:1 adult supervision required. No spa access for kids ~£20pp swim + food

Honest take on Shape B: The spa-on-beach dream is beautiful but expensive and usually adults-only. It conflicts with Noor's core ask: "I want the dads and children there." A spa morning for just the women + afternoon BBQ somewhere else could work, but that's two venues and more logistics. Park this unless Lauren's answer unlocks something.

Shape C — Private House with Pool

1. The Pool House, Westbury, Wiltshire ★ RUNNER-UP

Detail Info
Location Chapmanslade, Westbury, Wiltshire, BA13 4GF
From Portishead ~50 min
From London ~2h
What it is Stunning barn conversion. 10 bedrooms, sleeps 20. Indoor heated pool, sauna, hot tub, cinema room, fire pit, outdoor kitchen with BBQ, roof terrace
Price ~£7,250 for a weekend (Fri-Sun). Split 4-5 ways across couples = ~£1,500-1,800 per couple
Capacity 20 guests in beds. More for a day visit
Family-friendly Yes — enclosed garden, pool suitable for kids with supervision
Weather backup Excellent — indoor pool, cinema room, large indoor living spaces
Sam's allergies Self-catering = full control
Book luxurycottages.com

Why this works: This is the dream version. Everyone stays over, kids swim all day, adults BBQ and drink, no rushing anywhere. Indoor pool means weather is irrelevant. Wiltshire = east of Bristol, fair for London crowd. If couples split the cost, it's £350-450 per adult for a whole weekend — within budget if you frame it as "weekend away" rather than "birthday party."

Red flag: £7k is a big number even split. Noor explicitly said she doesn't want people spending money on her turning 40. Depends on whether guests see it as "shared weekend holiday" vs "Noor's birthday expense." You know the group — would they be up for cost-sharing a house?

2. Marsden Manor, Rendcomb, Cotswolds (kate & tom's)

Detail Info
Location Rendcomb, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire
From Portishead ~1h 15m
From London ~1h 45m
What it is 10-bed manor, sleeps 20. Heated pool (covered, open all year), tennis court, games room, acres of grounds, wendy house for kids
Price Weekend in May: ~£7,250-7,750. Midweek: ~£5,975. Bank hol weekend: ~£10,325
Book kateandtoms.com / 01242 235151

Why this works: Covered heated pool open all year = best weather backup of any Shape C option. Kate & tom's is a known quantity. Cotswolds location is perfect geographically.

Red flag: Similar cost to The Pool House. Less "wow factor" in terms of facilities (no cinema room, no outdoor kitchen), but the covered pool is a massive plus for UK May weather.

3. Gulliver's Hall, Bisley, Cotswolds (Unique Homestays)

Detail Info
Location Bisley, near Stroud, Gloucestershire
From Portishead ~1h
From London ~2h
What it is Luxury farmhouse in 320 acres. Sleeps 21. Outdoor heated pool (Apr-Oct), spa bath, sauna, steam room, outdoor kitchen (pizza oven + paella burner), games/cinema room, padel court, gym
Price From ~£5,895 short break / ~£7,795 per week
Book uniquehomestays.com

Why this works: The outdoor kitchen with pizza oven is peak "birthday BBQ." Pool, padel, cinema room — activities for everyone. Slightly cheaper than Marsden Manor.

Red flag: Pool is outdoor only (heated but not covered). If it buckets down on the 16th, you're inside. Still has cinema room and games room as fallback.

Shape D — Outdoor Activity Venue + Food

1. Mendip Activity Centre, Churchill, Somerset

Detail Info
Location Churchill, North Somerset, BS25
From Portishead ~35 min
From London ~2h 30m
What it is Outdoor activity centre. 30+ activities: tobogganing, high ropes, archery, bushcraft, paddleboarding, abseiling. Party packages for kids 4+. Cafe + catering. Up to 30 guests
Price Party packages available — need to call for group quote. Previous reports suggest ~£15-25pp for activity sessions + food packages from ~£8-12 per child
Weather backup Mixed — some activities work in rain (they're an outdoor centre, they're used to it). Alpine Lounge cafe for shelter. Not fully indoor though
Book mendip.co.uk

Why this works: Proper "activity day" which Noor asked for. Kids aged 4+ can do tobogganing, archery etc. Sam is 5 — perfect age. Adults can join in. Affordable. Close to Portishead.

Red flag: Not east of Bristol (it's south). London guests have a longer drive. More "kids' party venue" than "40th birthday celebration." Might not feel special enough for a milestone birthday.

2. Folly Farm Centre, Pensford, Somerset

Detail Info
Location Pensford, Bath & North East Somerset, BS39
From Portishead ~30 min
From London ~2h 15m
What it is 250-acre nature reserve with farmhouse (sleeps 28-48). Professional kitchen, Old Dairy dining room, BBQ in orchard garden. In-house caterers do BBQ/buffet from ~£35-50pp (kids half price)
Capacity Up to 48 guests
Weather backup Good — Old Dairy dining room with log burner, farmhouse indoors
Book follyfarm.org

Why this works: Beautiful setting. Proper catering with BBQ option. Big enough for the group with room to spare. Nature reserve = kids can explore. Close to both Bristol and Bath.

Red flag: 2-night minimum stay. Catering at £35-50pp pushes budget. More of a "weekend retreat" proposition than a single day event. Might overlap with Shape C territory.

Honest Red Flags

  1. Shape B is a dead end without Lauren's input. The spa-beach dream is either expensive (£100+pp), adults-only, or far west. Don't spend more time on it until you've texted Lauren.

  2. Shape C is amazing but might make Noor uncomfortable. She explicitly said she doesn't want people spending money on her. Even split across couples, £1,200-1,800 each is real money. You'd need to frame it as "group holiday that happens to be your birthday weekend" rather than "come spend money on Noor's 40th."

  3. Weather is the wildcard. Mid-May UK could be 22°C and sunny or 11°C and sideways rain. Only The Pool House and Marsden Manor truly don't care about weather (indoor pools). Cotswold Country Park is the best value but needs decent weather to really work.

  4. Sam's nut allergies are easiest to manage at BYO-food venues (Cotswold CP with BBQ hire, any Shape C self-catering house). Catered venues need flagging in advance.

What I'd Actually Do

If budget is king: Book Cotswold Country Park & Beach. Hire the BBQ. Book AquaVenture for the kids. Bring cool bags of food. Total cost under £300. Weather gamble, but it's May.

If the group would split a house: Book The Pool House, Westbury. Everyone comes Friday evening, party all day Saturday, lazy Sunday. Indoor pool, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, cinema for the kids. Weather-proof. Memorable. ~£1,500 per couple for the whole weekend.

Hedge: Book Cotswold Country Park as the plan, but have Gulliver's Hall or Marsden Manor as a "if everyone's up for it" upgrade conversation with the other couples first.
